"More steady blood sugar" comes from foods such as Lontar Sugar called "Low Glycemic Index” (Low-GI).
This means….

When you eat a High-Glycemic Index (High-GI) food, your blood sugar rises higher and quicker (jumps!) and declines faster (crashes!) (and so you feel low-energy and hungry sooner!) compared to if you eat a Low Glycemic Index (Low-GI) food.

When you eat a Low-GI food, your blood sugar stays lower and steadier.

Why is More Steady Blood Sugar Important?

Research shows that diets that support more steady blood sugar (Low Glycemic Index) reduce occurrence of diet-related diseases including:

  • Obesity.
  • Type 2 Diabetes.
  • Gestational Diabetes.
  • Metabolic Syndrome.
  • PCOS.
  • Heart Disease and Stroke.

At the same time, research shows that diets made up of High Glycemic Index foods are strongly associated with Type 2 diabetes incidence and positively associated with metabolic syndrome.

All of YAVA's foods use Lontar Sugar and ingredients like whole grain oats and cashews, that together create a Low-GI recipe, for steady blood sugar.

Where & How do
We Make Lontar Sugar?

  • Lontar Sugar is evaporated nectar from Lontar palm trees.
  • Lontar palms are common in dry areas of Eastern Indonesia.
  • Smallholder farmers collect the nectar by climbing Lontar trees! The Lontar palms is "wild-harvested" from naturally occurring Lontar trees, rather than from a plantation.
  • By buying evaporated Lontar nectar (also called “juru” or Lontar Sugar), YAVA creates a new source of income for farmers in low-income rural areas.
